I am often asked the question: how to wean a dog from gnawing on master's things; hamsters, rats or ferrets - to grab onto such obviously inedible items as rubber toys, electric cables, soles of boots and many other things that are completely non-gastronomic. I usually answer: no way. It is impossible to "wean" an animal to do what its internal needs urge it to do. In this case, I mean a lack of certain substances, that is, hypovitaminosis or mineral imbalance.
Now for the owners of animals in terms of their feeding, if not the golden age, then something close to that (I say this with full responsibility, as a person who has been making up a vitamin-mineral mixture of more than 30 preparations for his dogs for years). Now everything is much simpler: you go to a pet store and buy ready-made pills specifically for dogs (cats, rodents ...). There is also a selection of premixes for farm animals.
But living organisms are complex and unpredictable systems, and failures still occur from time to time. They provoke the emergence of imbalances: diseases, including colds, the breeding season, the change of season, even more so - molting, stress, and to a very large extent - parasites. Mild forms of a lack of a particular substance are often reflected in the behavior of the animal.
I will try to consider the most typical cases.
Your pet licks concrete walls, drags in its mouth, licks or gnaws stones, and at the sight of a piece of chalk it will not calm down until it eats it. This is what they do: dogs, horses, sometimes cats and ferrets. Well, everything is clear here: lack of calcium. Swap out your regular vitamin and mineral supplements for those that are high in calcium and phosphorus. (Without phosphorus, calcium is not absorbed, even if it enters the body in abundance). As an emergency measure, you can feed, for example, calcium lactate for a week or two. Hypocalcemia increases: during pregnancy, lactation (feeding), growth, recovery from injuries (fractures). Remember! In rodents and rabbits, this disease develops rapidly and leads to the most deplorable consequences, especially during the breeding season, and it is more difficult to trace it than in other animals, so their diet should always contain enough calcium and phosphorus.
Lethargy, drowsiness is sometimes accompanied by a deterioration in the quality of the coat or peeling of the skin. Typical: dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, goats, less often - rodents. Attention! These may be the first symptoms of an iodine deficiency disease. Prescribe seaweed, and be sure to consult with your veterinarian: iodine deficiency is extremely dangerous!
Eating moldy food. Horses, goats, sheep, cows, rabbits, less often predators and rodents suffer from this. Diagnosis: acute protein deficiency. Increases in pregnant and lactating animals. Exit: the appointment of protein premixes. For farm animals living outside the city, in the summer it would be great at least occasionally to eat mushrooms, provided that the owner understands them WELL and does not treat the goat with a toadstool. It's a good idea to add protein foods - eggs, reverse.
Eating earth, clay, peat. It is characteristic, in my opinion, of all animals and speaks of a complex lack of micro - and macronutrients. Increase your daily supplement intake to the maximum allowed. If this does not give a noticeable effect after 1-2 weeks, change the manufacturer (but before that, do not forget to check if your supplements have expired). Such a significant imbalance is also said: an indomitable interest in garbage dumps, strong-smelling substances, including medicines, the desire to gnaw unsuitable objects, for example, cardboard boxes, eating charcoal, sawdust, ash, soap, and also: deterioration of the appearance and quality of wool, bad breath, frequent bowel dysfunction, both constipation and diarrhea. Please note that most often such severe failures occur against the background of infection with worms, so do not forget to do tests and carry out adequate treatment. In general, for any animal that does not even go outside, I strongly recommend twice a year - in spring and autumn - to conduct a prophylactic course of anthelmintic drugs in accordance with the instructions.
In addition, in dogs, especially hunting breeds, interest in rotten meat is quite normal. It may also be due to a lack of enzymes or intestinal microflora - the stomach or intestines are junk, ordinary food is poorly digested, and rotten meat is already half-digested by microorganisms. The only question is that these are not always friendly organisms ...
Rats, for example, love soap, especially household soap.
Eating grass by dogs, cats, ferrets. Serves for mechanical cleaning of the stomach. An extremely healthy procedure, so put up with the greenish-foamy puddles that appear on the floor after this with a pile of grass in the center - nothing will cleanse your cat's or dog's stomach so well. In addition to green grass in summer, my cat used hay for the same purpose in winter. True, he did not start to milk ... In general, the interest of predators in the vegetarian menu is much higher than it is commonly believed. Experienced owners of dogs, cats and others will confirm and give a lot of examples of how their pets ate vegetables and fruits, both raw and boiled, with appetite. And nothing surprising. Their wild cousins do the same. When I was doing an internship in the Darwin Reserve, our group, observing a bird family, simultaneously contemplated a fox "grazing" in a raspberry-tree for an hour and a half. The predator was so carried away by sweet berries that she almost bumped into a man's nose ...
Indomitable thirst. Unfortunately, it is often the first sign of illness, including diabetes. Even more often, this indicates a purulent inflammation of the uterus with a closed cervix - pyometra - immediately for an ultrasound scan and for an operation!
People! You cannot feed the animals with sweets! Their pancreas is not designed for "unplanned" sugar and breaks down deplorably quickly. The amount of polysaccharides that they get from everyday food, including the same fruits, is more than enough for them.
Eating feces. Normal for rabbits and rodents. In other animals, it speaks of a strong mineral and vitamin imbalance or a lack of digestive enzymes.
Eating offspring. The rabbits and rodents "sin" the most. Possible reasons: vitamin and mineral imbalance, thirst (an elementary lack of water in the drinking bowl can cause the death of the offspring!), Too early motherhood. Less common in cats and ferrets, indicating poor feeding.
In addition, the inability to preserve offspring. Nature provides for the preservation of the female in the name of the future, possibly more numerous offspring, and not this offspring, which, in case of danger, will almost certainly not only die itself, but also destroy the mother. That is why one should not frighten the giving birth and lactating female, take offspring once again, and so on.
"They gnaw on something all the time, no matter what." Such complaints are sometimes heard from owners of dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits. As for predators - their jaws simply "need" the load - evolution made them so, and it is necessary, in addition to the "nutritious" part of the diet, to provide them with firm and elastic food that needs to be gnawed. Many of these "nibbles" are now sold in pet stores. NEVER let your dog chew bones! Scratching and a dead liver - at least, or even a blockage in the intestines! Only huge, which cannot be gnawed, raw beef net! Rabbits, on the other hand, need solid objects to grind their teeth, and if you don't provide your rabbit with branches, it will "decorate" the legs of your furniture.
Poor appetite, frequent refusals to eat. If the disease is ruled out, this is the classic picture of an overfed animal. Believe me, there is nothing good about it. Urgent measures are needed: the introduction of fasting days, an increase in physical activity, a decrease in feeding rates, or even a transition to low-calorie feed.

How to protect animals from flea and tick attacks?
Fleas and ticks can be a real nuisance for both dogs and cats and owners. Specialized pest repellents can be purchased at the pet store without any problems, but many people choose to avoid potentially hazardous chemicals to protect animals and family members. This is especially true for young children who love to lie and hug their pet. Are there any ways to safely prevent flea and tick attacks? Of course have. It is worth trying a few proven ways to help protect your four-footed friend.
Homemade Powder - Pest Repellent
Powder preventing from fleas and ticks, removes pests that have already managed to invade your pet's body. The ingredients in this powder are rarely used for animal skin care, but in this case they are perfect.
- 1 cup food grade diatomite (Kieselguhr),
- ½ cup of neem powder,
- ½ cup yarrow powder,
- 20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and then apply a small amount of the powder on the back of the cat or dog. Use a soft brush to rub in the powder to get the powder onto your pet's skin.
Food-grade diatomaceous earth will effectively dry the pest's body, and Neem powder will scare off fleas and ticks and destroy their larvae. Yarrow will soothe your pet's skin, while eucalyptus essential oil will prevent new pests from emerging. If the pet has fleas, use the powder every day until the fleas are completely gone. You can dust the bed in which your animal sleeps and then vacuum it. If you use a powder to get rid of parasites from your cat's fur, do not use eucalyptus essential oil, because cats sometimes react badly to essential oils.
Flea and tick repellent spray
A simple, safe way to help protect dogs and cats from pests is with diluted apple cider vinegar. It is enough to sprinkle the four-legged with a small amount of apple cider vinegar diluted with water and spray on the pet's fur. The procedure should be repeated daily, paying attention to the areas behind the ears and at the base of the tail, as these are favorite spots where fleas love to nest.
Baths with the addition of mild shampoo
Many people use the standard flea removal method, which is taking a bath. Fleas do not like water, and the moment you bathe your pet in the bath or shower, they are washed off the pet's fur. This is one of the safest ways, as long as your dog or cat loves to swim. When bathing, you can use a mild pet shampoo or, if necessary, use a small amount of dishwashing liquid. After bathing, comb the fur of the four-legged friend with a comb to get rid of any remaining fleas.
Maintaining order in the courtyard
If you live in a house with a garden and your dog is out in the garden or playpen almost all day, there is a good chance that your pet will return home with a tick clinging to its skin. How can this be prevented? The best way is to mow the grass frequently, as mites like to hide in thick and long grass. Therefore, it is worth regularly beautifying the garden so that your pet feels safe.
Many people wear cotton suits for their pets that protect sensitive areas of the body. Pet clothing provides an easy way to protect your pet from tick attacks and is available in many stores in various sizes.
Best Stationary Ultrasonic Dog Repeller
In the first place is a scarer with an autonomous mode of operation. The device is powered by solar panels. The device will effectively protect the territory not only from dogs, but also from wolves, foxes, and other predators. It is equipped with an IR motion sensor that can be adjusted by changing the sensitivity. Due to this, the repeller turns on only in cases where movement is detected. This approach allows you to economically consume the charge. There are 3 modes available to the user, allowing you to configure the device for certain animals. The operating range is 7 m. When installing on the site, make sure that the viewing angle is 120 degrees, it is then that the repeller will be most effective.
- power - 100.3 dB (at a distance of 1 m)
- frequency - 14-25 kHz
- protection against dust and water according to the IP54 protocol.
The second line is occupied by a stationary dog repeller, equipped with a motion sensor, like the previous model. Thanks to this, the device does not idle and does not waste the charge in vain. Power is supplied from rechargeable batteries. The device is charged using a USB port. The range of the device is about 10 m. It fixes animals at a distance of 6 to 8 m. The repeller can be used year-round at temperatures from -20 to +50 degrees and with humidity not higher than 90 percent.
- power - 110 dB
- frequency - 18-24 kHz
- automatically changing frequency
- acceptable cost - 2900 r.
The third position goes to a Russian-made stationary dog repeller, which has a wide frequency range. The range of action is about 20 m, so a rather large area will be protected from uninvited guests. It works year-round at temperatures from -40 to +80, but the device will have to be protected from rain, since the manufacturer did not take care of this, and moisture can lead to damage.
How to stop a cat from chewing on wires
I remember that in the period when we just got a cat, I saw this problem with my cat. But everything went away with age, the young cat turned into a solid cat, and the problem disappeared, the wires were not as tasty as they once seemed. Having stumbled upon this problem again, on Sibmam, I remembered myself and decided to write in detail all the ways to eliminate this hooliganism among pets, so that they do not irritate their owners, which means they do not jeopardize their stay in such kind and warm hands. ...
So, I'll start.
Regardless of the methods, be sure to buy cat vitamins first, where iron and taurine are present! Perhaps the cat lacks any vitamins and minerals.

Not always well-established traditional ways to get rid of such a bad habit are considered humane. Many mothers refuse to use such techniques, considering them too harsh (“I can’t scoff at the baby”). However, they should still be listed.
- Perhaps the most common and at the same time controversial method is to smear children's fingers with hot pepper, mustard and similar natural bitterness. It is believed that having tried such an unpleasant spicy seasoning once or several times, the child will then stop biting the nail plates.
- The older generation often advises treating marigolds with greenery, since such an unpleasant appearance can alienate the baby so much that he will stop biting his nails. If, nevertheless, the fingers end up in the mouth, their own green lips, seen later in the mirror, can turn the child away from the bad habit.
Such methods are ambiguous, however, judging by the reviews, they can still work, especially if the ward is from two to four years old. For older children, such methods will definitely not work.
